Highlights

  • The Chikungunya outbreak in Kassala state was successfully contained (with 19,897 cases in total) after sustained and combined efforts from the WHO, UNICEF and the Sudan Ministry of Health. Unfortunately, a resurgence in neighboring Red Sea State has been recorded with response plans actioned utilizing lessons learned from the Kassala experience. To date, case increases are limited to Port Sudan and no fatalities have been recorded.

IOM Sudan, colour marked the celebrations of the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration in the Horn of Africa. The event which was held at the IOM Sudan office in Khartoum was attended by representatives from the EU delegation, ten migrant returnees from Libya and 16 representatives of Nigerian, Ethiopian and Eritrean migrant communities.

December 10, 2018 (KHARTOUM) - Sudanese security has captured 4 human traffickers as they were preparing to take 57 foreign nationals towards the Libyan border.

The semi-official Sudan Media Center (SMC) Sunday said the victims were hidden at a house in East Nile locality, east of Khartoum, pointing that the police is still searching for 3 other traffickers.

It added the initial legal action was taken against the human traffickers.

4 December 2018 – Six countries in WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean and African Regions have signed a declaration committing themselves to strengthening preparedness and response to public health threats and events across borders in an effort to further the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) and enhance global health security. The Khartoum Declaration on Sudan and Bordering Countries: Cross-Border Health Security was signed by Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan and Sudan on 22 November 2018 in Khartoum, Sudan.

November 16, 2018 (KHARTOUM) - The Sudanese Commission of Refugees (SCR) said 400 Ethiopian refugees have arrived in the eastern state of Gedaref following ethnic clashes between Amhara and Tigray.

Sudan’s commissioner of refugees Hamad al-Gizouli said the Ethiopian refugees have entered Sudan through Gallabat and Metemma border crossing points between the two countries.

25 October 2018 (UNHCR): Over 50 officials of the Sudanese Government participated in a two-day workshop on national and international protection and refugee law, counter human-trafficking, and protection of victims of human-trafficking and irregular migrants. The training workshop, organized by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in collaboration with the Commission of Refugees (COR) of the Sudanese Government and the United Nations Migration Agency (IOM), was held recently in Dongola, Northern Sudan State.

Northern seasonal rains forecast to typically subside and likely timely onset for October rains

KEY MESSAGES

  • The June to September seasonal rains gradually subsided in late September, marking the cessation of persistent well aboveaverage rainfall amounts across most of the northern sector, which led to widespread flooding in Sudan. However, some areas of the region experienced significant cumulative seasonal deficits, including some central areas of Ethiopia, eastern and central South Sudan, and northern and eastern Uganda.

The 2017 Sudan Participatory Assessment, conducted between October and December 2017, involved 6,009 Persons of Concern to UNHCR engaged through some 385 semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, individual interviews and participatory observation sessions. This assessment exercise was conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with partners, actively supported by the Government of Sudan, to engage refugees, asylum-seekers and refugee returnees – women, men, girls and boys of di fferent age, gender, nationality and ability – to identify their needs and examine ways to address them.

  • During the month of August, Sudan continued to receive significantly above-average rainfall, which caused additional widespread flooding, fatalities, livestock and crop losses, and infrastructure damage. As moderate to localized heavy rainfall is forecast over the next two weeks, particularly in southern areas, a heightened flood-risk is expected through mid-September.

July 16, 2018 (KHARTOUM) - Sudan’s Higher Committee to Combat Human Trafficking said it would develop a national anti-trafficking strategy as well as activating existing laws to counter the phenomenon in accordance with the established international standards.

In a meeting chaired by Vice-President Hassabo Mohamed Abdel-Rahman on Sunday, the committee discussed legal frameworks to combat human trafficking besides humanitarian and social effects of the phenomenon.
