HIGHLIGHTS

· There have been 20 206 reported cases of Ebola virus disease, with 7905 reported deaths.

· Reported case incidence is fluctuating in Guinea and decreasing in Liberia, although Liberia reported more cases in the week ending 28 December than in the previous week.

· There are signs that the increase in incidence has slowed in Sierra Leone. However, the west of the country is still experiencing the most intense transmission of all affected countries.

· The United Kingdom has reported its first confirmed case of Ebola.

Despite significant needs across all sectors, the humanitarian response in Ethiopia remained underfunded given more high-profile emergencies around the world during the year. As a result, the national Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) was only 58 per cent funded at the end of the year.

Inspired by Matthew 25:31-46 to care for the poor and oppressed, Dorcas has been working for 35 years to provide relief and development projects in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.   • In West Africa, markets were well supplied with staple foods in November as regional harvests progressed. Staple food prices were stable or declining, except in areas directly and indirectly affected by the conflict in northeastern Nigeria. The Ebola outbreak has led to both official and voluntary restrictions on the movement of goods and people in affected Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, resulting in atypical market trends in some areas.

Summary

This Emergency Appeal seeks a total of some CHF 1.05m to enable the IFRC to support the Ethiopia Red Cross to deliver assistance and support to a total of some 34,365 people with a focus on reducing the health risks of the South Sudan refugee population and host communities in Gambella through the provision of first aid and community-based health in Leitchour camp, Ningnang and Pagak entry point. The planned response reflects the current situation and information available at this point of the evolving operation.

  • The total number of South Sudanese refugees who have entered Ethiopia since the outbreak of the conflict in mid-December 2013 is now over 194,261 individuals, comprising 191,659 individuals who entered through Gambella and 2,602 who entered through the Assosa region.

  • The average arrival rate of South Sudanese refugees to the Gambella region has remained low as the rainy season comes to an end.
