INTRODUCTION
This is the third and final issue in 2001 of this quarterly report prepared by the FAO Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) on the food supply situation, cereal import and food aid requirements for all countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The report is designed to provide the latest analysis and information on the food situation in these countries to governments, international organizations and other institutions engaged in humanitarian operations.

NAIROBI, 26 December (IRIN) - Some 4,000 Somali refugees returned home in two convoys from Daror camp (8.44 N; 44.42 E) in eastern Ethiopia on Saturday and Sunday, 22 and 24 December, the UN refugee agency told IRIN on Wednesday. Most of the refugees in Daror are from the Burao area, in the Toghdeer Region of northwestern Somalia.

Highlights

Insufficient rains during the recent deyr season (late September through November) in southern and eastern parts of the Somali region are raising concerns about pasture and water availability for livestock during the ensuing long jilaal (dry) season (December to March).

The Republic of Yemen has recently lifted its ban imposed since September 2000 on livestock imports from the Horn of Africa.

NAIROBI, 19 December (IRIN) - Tension is rising "considerably" between Ethiopia and Eritrea, according to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan who urged both sides to exercise restraint and avoid provocative actions.

WHO has received reports of 391 cases including 37 deaths from 10 September until 10 December 2001. The majority of these cases (307 including 16 deaths) have occurred in the Sidama Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). Within the Sidama Zone, the woredas of Dale and Sheedino are the most severely affected.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Health has provided 250 000 doses of vaccine for a mass vaccination campaign in the affected areas, which will be carried out with the support of Médecins sans Frontières (Holland).
