• The Sahel region has undergone significant and widespread rainfall deficits, leading to significantly below average vegetation levels.

• Worst affected areas are Senegal, southern Mauritania, eastern Niger, NE Nigeria and central Chad • There was some recovery from late July, in particular in Niger and Chad. However, Senegal and Mauritania remained affected by persistent rainfall deficits.

The desert locust (DL1) situation remained calm in February in winter breeding areas due to unfavorable ecological conditions. Only a few scattered solitary adults and/or hoppers were reported in northern Mauritania, southwest Libya and along the Red Sea coasts in Sudan and Saudi Arabia.

Vatican City, 20 September 2007 - Huge swathes of Africaare under water with severe flooding driving over 1.5 million people from their homes. Countries affected range from Mauritaniaon the Atlantic seaboard right through to Kenyaon the Indian Ocean, and include Burkina Faso, Togo, Ghana, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda.

Caritas is launching emergency appeals to respond to the needs of people in Ugandaand Ghana.

In Uganda, flooding has affected 300,000 people and with no let up in the heavy rains, that figure is expected to rise.
