OFID Quarterly examines the wellbeing, safety of children across the world

Vienna, Austria, August 2, 2017. “I like schnitzels, but some food, I don't like,” says 14 year-old Shokria, who is originally from Afghanistan. “I miss some special food from Afghanistan.” Shokria left her home when her father was killed and has been in Vienna for nearly two years. Her story is just one of many perspectives on child refugees examined by the July edition of the OFID Quarterly magazine, which is circulating as of today.

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has signed loan agreements totaling US$111m with partner countries Bolivia, Ethiopia and Guinea on the sidelines of the World Bank Spring Meetings held April 21-23 in Washington, DC. The agreements were signed by OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish and ministers from the beneficiary countries.

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved a US$500,000 grant in humanitarian aid to help provide food assistance to conflict-affected people from South Sudan, who are fleeing the country to seek refuge in neighboring countries Ethiopia, Kenya, the Sudan and Uganda. The grant will be channelled through the World Food Program (WFP), which is presently transporting supplies to the hardest-hit communities.

Meeting in its 146th Session, the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved financing of nearly US$264 million to boost socio-economic development in over 30 partner countries. Of the new commitments, over US$193m will support 10 public sector loans and nine grants. The bulk of the public sector funding will co-finance agriculture, transportation, education, energy, health and water supply and sanitation projects.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is partnering with the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) to help finance a project that will help rural communities in northern Ethiopia adopt modern agro-industrial processing technologies and generate new job opportunities.

OFID is supporting the US$2.5 million project with a US$600,000 grant. The grant agreement was signed in Vienna today by UNIDO Director General, Kandeh K. Yumkella, and OFID Director General, Suleiman Jasir Al-Herbish.

May 11, 2006, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved a grant of US$50,000 in support of a project of the Social Welfare Development Association (SWDA), a non-profit NGO based in Ethiopia. The scheme aims at providing some 1,160 vulnerable children with the social services needed to help them integrate into the community and become self-sufficient.

Increasing poverty levels in Ethiopia have also lead to the rise in the number of street children, particularly in the capital Addis Ababa.

December 2, 2003, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development today approved a grant of US$200,000 towards the first phase of an initiative to eliminate the tsetse fly in Ethiopia's Southern Rift Valley. Coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the scheme is part of a larger regional project that aims to expand eradication efforts to other sub-Saharan countries in order to boost food security and reduce poverty.

Agriculture and animal husbandry are a vital source of income and provide food for much of Ethiopia's rural population.

Under a special Food Aid Grant Account, the OPEC Fund has provided a total US$20 million to assist a number of countries in Africa severely affected by the worsening crisis.
