  2. Some 56,000 people remain displaced mostly in Agok and South Sudan. Of 105,000 who ed in may 2011, some 35,000 returned quickly to areas south of the Bahr Al Arab/Kiir river, and 14,000 others returned to areas north of the river.

The Joint Assessment Mission (JAM) conducted in September 2012 aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the situation, needs, risks, capacities and vulnerabilities of refugees in Malawi with regard to food, livelihood, their nutritional/health situation and related matters. The current programme is coming to an end, and this JAM Report aims to provide information for further assistance through the design of a new programme cycle for both WFP (the PRRO) and UNHCR. The last JAM was carried out in 2009 in coordination with the GoM and other stakeholders.

December 29/2012 The construction of water facilities has been launched in West Wollega Zone of Oromia State at a cost of more than 29 million Birr, the Zonal water, mines and energy office said. Office deputy head Gurmessa Oljira told ENA that the facilities include the construction of 932 spring development and 215 hand-dug wells. He said the public would contribute through labor and in cash for the projects which would benefit more than 255,000 residents. The facilities are expected to raise the water coverage of the zone to 78.5 from 63.4 percent at present.

The operational timeframe has been extended for 12 months; therefore the end of the operation will be on 31 August 2013. A final report will be made available by 30 November 2013 (three months after the end of the operation).

Addis Ababa December 25/2012 Ethiopia and Japan signed Tuesday grant agreement amounting to 5.84 million US dollars to assist poor farmers to increase their productivity. The grant will be used to purchase fertilizer to benefit poor farmers under the Food Security for Under Privileged Farmers- KRII Project. Finance and Economic Development State Minister, Ahmed Shide and Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Hiroyuki Kishino signed the agreement.

Shire Endasillsie December 26/2012 The construction of potable water project is underway in Shire’endasilassie town at a cost of more than 40 million Birr, town water service office said. Office manager, Zenebe Hadush told ENA that the project includes the construction of two sink wells, installation of pipe line and reservoir. Upon the completion of the project until the end of this Ethiopian year, it would enhance the water coverage of the town to 50 from 30 percent at present, he said. The manager said government and NGOs covered the construction cost of the projects.

Empowering HIV-positive women

In 2002, Françoise from Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was admitted to the UN World Food Programme’s (WFP) HIV and AIDS programme. “Food assistance has been my only reliable source of food, especially when I was sick and hospitalized,” recalls Françoise, who lost her husband to AIDS.

In addition to food, HIV-positive people can also receive training and non-food assistance from WFP’s partner organizations to allow them to learn valuable life skills, such as how to start a business, to help them become self-sufficient.

“A growing number of Ethiopians opt to undergo a perilous journey through the Gulf of Aden, hoping to get to the Middle East via Yemen,” Demissew Bizuwerk, a communication officer for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Ethiopia, told IRIN.

ADDIS ABABA, 21 December 2012 (IRIN) - Jemmal Ahmed, 21, was recently deported back to Ethiopia after a nine-month stay in a prison in Yemen for illegally entering the country a few months earlier. His intention had been to cross over into Saudi Arabia to find work.
