INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES

Over the last few months, the peaceful coexistence of people living in Gedeo and West Guji has been disturbed. The Gedeo–Guji tension has resulted in thousands of people being displaced from their homes by violence. Nongovernmental organizations, such as Catholic Relief Services and World Vision, are collaborating with the Government of Ethiopia to address people’s immediate needs through holistic responses for internally displaced people (IDPs)—addressing health, nutrition, sanitation and shelter needs.

On 19 November 2018, the Council adopted conclusions on Ethiopia. The Council notes that Ethiopia has witnessed momentous change and that political and economic reforms have gained a new impetus under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. His ambitious agenda towards a more democratic and just Ethiopian society is a positive example for the region and beyond.

Addis Ababa October 5/2018 Training on post-conflict recovery is being given to peacekeepers from nine African countries at the Ethiopian Peace Support Training Center (EPSTC).

Opening the 9th round training today, Peace Keeping Main Department Acting Director Birgadier-General Habtamu Tilahun said concrete and sustainable post-conflict reconstruction is required to address the interlinked causes of political violence and under-development, and prevent relapse into conflict in the Horn of Africa.

Addis Ababa October 22/2018 Ethiopian peacekeeping force to Sudan’s disputed region of Abyei has brought success in stabilizing the region, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

Ethiopia is one of the top troop contributing countries to the United Nations (UN) with more than 8,300 peacekeepers on the ground, the country’s troops are discharging the responsibility in Abyei, it was learned.

A press release sent to ENA said that Ethiopian Ambassador to Sudan, Shiferaw Jarso discussed on the spot with member of the peacekeeping force on the role of the mission.

Addis Ababa October 22/2018 The Government of Ethiopian and Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) have signed a peace deal on Sunday in Asmara, Eritrea that culminated one of the oldest arms struggle in Ethiopia, according to MoFA.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Workneh Gebeyehu led the Ethiopian delegation accompanied by Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide and Vice President of Somali Region, Mustafe Mohamed where as on the ONLF side led by the Chairman, Admiral Mohamed Umer Usman.

There is a powerful wind of hope blowing across the Horn of Africa region, said UN chief António Guterres on Sunday, in Saudi Arabia to witness the signing of a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, ending decades of simmering conflict.

Saudi Arabia facilitated the agreement, and in a message on Twitter, the Foreign Ministry said that the accord, signed in Jeddah “is a historic milestone for the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and will contribute to strengthening security and stability in the region at large”.

Renewed violence in the Oromia and SNNP regions of Ethiopia has caused the displacement of over one million Ethiopians, who are now in critical need of humanitarian assistance.

The Government of Ethiopia and humanitarian partners require a total of USD 117.7 million to scale up their response to the most recent round of internal displacement.

UNHCR has received USD 7.5 million from CERF for procurement and distribution of non-food items (NFIs) in regions affected by the recent displacement.

August 13, 2018 (KHARTOUM) - The Ethiopian rebel Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) Sunday declared a unilateral ceasefire pointing to the call for peace by the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The ONLF “declares Unilateral ceasefire from today – 12:00 pm, August 12, 2018, that and will cease all military and security operations directed against the Ethiopian Security Apparatus in the Somali territory (Ogaden), until a negotiated comprehensive cessation of hostilities is reached with the Ethiopian government,” says the rebel group.
