Addis Ababa, September 22/2018 - More than 1,700 displaced persons from Burayu and its environs due to the recent conflict have returned to their homes, according to Addis Ababa City Administration.

In a press release sent to ENA today, the administration added that the number of persons temporarily sheltered in the capital has reached 15,860, and 1,786 of these have returned to their neighborhoods.

The city administration is relocating some 9,000 displaced sheltered in 9 schools to other centers as classes are to commence on Monday.

The communique underscored the need to combine and strengthen the effort of Horn of Africa countries currently responding to an outbreak of poliovirus detected in environmental surveillance and human case samples from Somalia and Kenya. The polio outbreak has been classified as a Grade 2 Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Introduction

Ethiopia has a long standing history of hosting refugees. In 2004, a National Refugee Law was enacted based on the international and regional refugee conventions to which Ethiopia is a party. Currently, the country is host to some 905,800 refugees, the majority from South Sudan (46.6%), Somalia (28.4%), Eritrea (19.2%) and Sudan (4.9%). As conflicts are ongoing in neighbouring countries, refugees continue to enter Ethiopia on a daily basis, making it the second largest refugee-hosting country in Africa.

  • At least 23 people were killed in a weekend of violence near the capital Addis Ababa. It is reported that mobs of ethnic Oromo youths brutally attacked non-Oromo people, committed sexual violence, looted businesses and destroyed houses. The violence resulted in the displacement of 13 000 persons, mostly women and children who fled the area to seek refuge in 12 different sites of the capital, as well as with host communities. The Ethiopian Red Cross Society rapidly provided humanitarian assistance to the displaced people, in the form of non-food items.

At least 23 people have been killed in ethnic violence near Ethiopia's capital.

The violence broke out Saturday after a rally to celebrate the return of the exiled leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a rebel group that recently signed a peace deal with the Ethiopian government.

Reports say organized mobs attacked residents and looted businesses in the Burayu district, located in the Oromia region that surrounds the capital.

There is a powerful wind of hope blowing across the Horn of Africa region, said UN chief António Guterres on Sunday, in Saudi Arabia to witness the signing of a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, ending decades of simmering conflict.

Saudi Arabia facilitated the agreement, and in a message on Twitter, the Foreign Ministry said that the accord, signed in Jeddah “is a historic milestone for the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and will contribute to strengthening security and stability in the region at large”.

▪ The third round of EHF funding has been allocated, with four Agriculture Sector agencies allocated a combined total of USD1.5 million.

▪ The DRM ATF meeting was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources, attended by nearly 40 members. The main topics were the response plan for Gedo-West Guji, Fall Armyworm, and updating the Agriculture Sector Action Plan and Terms of Reference.

Ethiopia had secured recently the Biosafety mobile laboratory-level three (BSL-3). This laboratory is intended to manipulate highly infectious agents occurred as an outbreak while reducing the risk to laboratory workers and the environment.
