Ethiopia Experiences Poor Meher Production as Food Crisis Continues
Food security conditions remain precarious in Ethiopia. According to Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission (DPPC) records, the number of people in need of food aid now exceeds that of 1994, which was widely believed to have been the worst year for food security in Ethiopia since the famine of 1984/85.

Heavy Rains in September and October in several parts of the country have resulted in serious flooding causing several deaths, displacement of a large number of people and severe damage to crops and property. Food and non-food assistance is being distributed by the Government in the affected areas. Elsewhere in the country, earlier drought conditions and unusually heavy rains in October have affected yield potential of the 1999 main "Meher" season cereal and pulse crops now being harvested.
