Addis Ababa -- Judith Lewis, Country Director of United Nations World Food Programme, today signed a US $94.8 million development assistance agreement with the Ethiopian government during a ceremony at the Ministry of Economic Development and Co-operation.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (PANA) - Ethiopia has said the number of its nationals deported from Eritrea is expected to rise to 39,076 when the next batch of 2,600 arrives Friday.
The Ethiopians have been expelled since the border dispute between the two countries erupted seven months ago. Ethiopia has also expelled thousands of Eritreans.

Six hundred of the deportees are expected to cross near Humera, north-western Ethiopia. The other 2,000 will be arriving Sunday through the Bure border post, north-eastern part of the country.

Ethiopia's main rainy season has ended and a record harvest is forecast. The unseasonably late, heavy rains that covered northern and eastern Ethiopia in October tapered off late in the month, allaying fears of widespread crop damage from flooding and helping some crops by allowing them to complete the grain-filling stage. The benefits were most noticeable in areas where the rainy season had a late start.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the second annual loan for Ethiopia under the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility (ESAF),1 equivalent to SDR 29.5 million (about US$42 million) to support the government's economic and financial program for the fiscal year 1998-99 (July 8-July 7). The loan will be disbursed in two equal semiannual installments, the first of which is available immediately.
