1) A delayed start of the rainfall season across northwestern Ethiopia, southern Eritrea, and bordering areas in Sudan has negatively impacted cropping activities, including planting. After this past week’s heavy rainfall, moderate rains are forecast during the next outlook period, which could help to alleviate dryness over the region.

ADDIS ABABA – A groundbreaking meeting in the Ethiopian capital this week has strengthened efforts to scale up nutrition initiatives under the Renewed Efforts Against Child Hunger and Undernutrition initiative, known as REACH.

It has been the largest-scale gathering of the REACH partnership since the initiative was established in 2008. It brought together technical experts and officials from four UN agencies in all 12 countries where the REACH approach is being followed, as well as from the host country, Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Fifteen countries from Africa’s most drought prone regions are meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to share practices on how to best address recurrent droughts and chronic food insecurity on the continent.

Governments and organizations from Africa’s Horn and Sahel regions are showcasing initiatives on some of the good agricultural practices with a view of easing the impact of recurrent droughts on the continent’s productivity. Both regions suffer recurrent and severe droughts, sometimes leading to famine.

UNHCR launched the five-year Light Years Ahead campaign in January 2011, aiming to raise funds to improve the basic cooking and lighting needs of more than 450,000 refugees in seven African countries.

In addition to high food prices and a poor belg harvest last year, the season failed this year in the north, and southern belg crops are expected to have a meager harvest 1?2 months late. In pastoral areas, the bad performance of the gu season means that the July-September dry season is likely to be exceptionally harsh.

Ethiopia - High levels of food insecurity persist

The 2008 meher harvest was inadequate in several regions, leaving 12.4 million people in need of food or cash assistance. Furthermore, the planting of this year's Belg crop has been delayed due to insufficient rains fueling fears of a second failed harvest. The situation is especially worrisome in the regions of SNNPR, Oromia, Tigray and Afar, where the Belg harvest provides for the majority of household food needs.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is launching meningitis prevention activities in 14 countries in Africa to get ready for what could be one of the worst meningitis epidemics in a decade. The move came as a reaction to the warning given by the World Health Organization on October 9.

The first indications of an epidemic could appear as early as February-March 2008.

Ethiopia - Worsening situation in Somali region

The situation has been causing concern in part of Somali region since the intensification in counter-insurgency operations in April 2007. Since June, a strict control on border crossing with Somalia has also been established. These have resulted in a decrease in livestock and livestock product sales, on which people from Somali region rely heavily to procure cereals and other imported items.
