Addis Ababa – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, assisted in the voluntary return of 76 Ethiopian stranded migrants from Libya on 24 September 2018. The group comprised 12 women and 64 men. Among the returnees, four were migrant children, while six were psychiatric cases.

Each said he or she had no means to return home without the Organization’s support.

The migrants departed Zintan, Libya making their way to Cairo, Egypt then arriving in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is an important country of origin, transit and destination for people in mixed migration flows in the Horn of Africa region.

Mixed migration movements into Ethiopia predominantly include refugees, trafficked persons, irregular and economic migrants from neighbouring countries particularly from South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan and Yemen.

Some 11 additional Ethiopians have returned today to their homeland.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tewolde Mulugeta who welcomed them at Bole International Airport said 50 Ethiopians are also expected to come in the coming few days from Libya.

The Government of Ethiopia has brought back over 100 Ethiopian citizens from South Africa and Yemen last week, it was learned.

According to the spokesperson, integrated efforts are being exerted to safely bring Ethiopians from Libya with the support of Sudan and Egypt.

IOM has provided basic business training to 26 Ethiopian voluntary returnees from Egypt and Libya to improve their chances of successful reintegration in Ethiopia.

The five-day training in Addis Ababa, which was provided in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Federal Micro and Small Enterprises Development Agency (FeMSEDA), covered topics including entrepreneurship, preparing a business plan and basic book-keeping skills.

Recent evidence indicates that poverty in Africa and in all the regions of the world declined over the period 2005-2010. In Africa, the proportion of people living below the poverty line decreased to 40% in 2008 from 47% in 1990, making it the first ever reversal of the long term poverty trend (see Figure 1). However, there are disparities in the rate of decline between Africa and other regions.

MAI-AINI REFUGEE CAMP, Ethiopia, March 19 (UNHCR) – Gebre* knew the dangers as well as any 13-year-old. He understood that to be captured fleeing his country by the Eritrean border guards could mean jail or worse. And anyone taking the route to Ethiopia via Sudan could be held for ransom.

But what was certain was that soon Gebre would be old enough to serve in the Eritrean military, where service is tough and lasts for decades. He discussed the matter with his family and together they agreed that he was better off risking a litany of woes than a life of lost opportunity.

Addis Ababa, March 25, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - The government of Ethiopia has taken out 93 Ethiopians from Libya to Tunisia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

According to the Spokesperson of the Ministry, the Ethiopians were transported from Libya with car in two rounds and reached at the outskirts of a Tunisian boarder town.

The government along with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will help return the Ethiopians to their homeland, the Spokesperson said.
