Introduction.

Increased conflict in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal (GBeG)1 region led to waves of displacement and the further deterioration of food security between April and June 2018.
Armed clashes in Western Bahr el Ghazal (WBeG) State and the Greater Tonj area2 negatively impacted the ability of affected communities to meet primary needs and resulted in restricted humanitarian access to both areas. Meanwhile, environmental factors triggered severe food insecurity in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG) State.

Introduction

The month of October was characterised by a respite in fighting across the state of Upper Nile.
This has created opportunities for increased humanitarian access to areas that have been affected by continued fighting or insecurity for the past months such as the counties located on the western bank of the Nile and the counties of the south-eastern portion of the state.

Nevertheless, the humanitarian outlook has yet to improve as the level of access to basic services remains alarmingly low across most sectors.

JUBA, South Sudan, Aug 9 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - For the past two weeks, Sandy has slept on the dirty floor of a small and stuffy tent, squeezed in tightly with 54 other women and girls and countless night-biting mosquitoes.

Things are looking up.

For now at least, Sandy has company and a canvas cover.

"I feel much safer here in the tent," she said of her new home in a United Nations-protected site.

With her buzzed haircut and mature mien, 14-year-old Sandy is stern faced and slow to smile.

Introduction

Despite a potential respite in fighting in lower counties along the western bank, dispersed fighting and widespread displacements trends continued into June and impeded the provision of primary needs and access to basic services for assessed settlements. Only 45% of assessed settlements reported adequate access to food and half reported access to healthcare facilities across Upper Nile State, while the malnutrition, malaria and cholera concerns reported in May continued into June.
