JUBA, South Sudan (June 29, 2018) — The global humanitarian organization CARE is encouraged by the ceasefire announced this week by warring factions in the world’s youngest country, South Sudan, particularly the portion of the agreement calling for opening up corridors of humanitarian aid. The ceasefire is due to begin June 30, and the parties are committed to finalizing four outstanding issues in the security arrangements by that point.

Since the outbreak of the civil war in South Sudan 4 years ago, on the 13th of December 2013, millions of South Sudanese have been and are still fleeing every day from brutal violence, extensive food insecurity and a lack of access to basic services. Handicap International is supporting civilians displaced within the country and the people who took refuge in neighbouring countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya or Uganda.

Fundraising appeal has helped Trócaire scale up its efforts in East African countries where drought situation continues to deteriorate.

For several months now, the East African countries of Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya have been experiencing the devastating impacts of prolonged drought. Over 26 million people in the affected regions are now severely food insecure.

Trócaire has been engaged in a relief effort with fellow humanitarian agencies, funding partners and local organisations to support the most vulnerable and worst impacted.

There are now at least two million refugees who have fled conflict and hunger in South Sudan in search of safety in other countries. An additional 1.9 million people have been displaced internally by violence within South Sudan’s borders. Uganda is currently hosting about half of South Sudan’s refugees, but the Republic of Sudan has also taken in just under 425,000 refugees, and Ethiopia, South Sudan’s neighbor to the east, is now hosting more than 379,000 refugees.

With 20 million women, children and men struggling to find food and safe drinking water in parts of Africa and Yemen, Canadians donated more than $8 million to the Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies during the Stop Famine Together joint campaign.
