The European Union invests €170 million to tackle instability and irregular migration in the Horn of Africa

The European Commission has today approved a package of 11 new actions under the EU Trust Fund for Africa to improve stability and address the root causes of irregular migration and forced displacement in the Horn of Africa region.

The Horn of Africa has again been hit by famine and drought. Norway has allocated NOK 50 million in emergency relief to the people living in the region.

The allocation will be channelled through the UN, the Red Cross and other NGOs, and will be used to meet immediate needs.

Norway's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, commented: "It is vital to focus more closely on political solutions for this region. Horn of Africa receives 40% of all international food aid.

With five new financial decisions, the European Commission is providing a total of €54 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable people in Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and Uganda. The funds are channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department under the direct responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

"The Greater Horn of Africa faces humanitarian threats on a lot of fronts," said Louis Michel. "In this region ravaged by extreme weather conditions, chronic conflict and deep poverty, millions of people are now on the brink of collapse.

The European Commission has allocated a further €21 million in humanitarian aid for the Horn of Africa: Assistance is being provided to vulnerable populations in Somalia(€13m), Eritrea(€4m) and Ethiopia(€4m). So far in 2008, the Commission has provided nearly €120 million in humanitarian aid, including food aid, to needy people in the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somaliaand Uganda).

In a press release issued on 27 April, the UNHCR announced that High Commissioner António Guterres wrapped up his mission to Sudan with a visit to Kassala State, in eastern Sudan, which hosts about 136,000 refugees from Eritrea and Ethiopia.
