The ICRC opened its delegation in Eritrea in 1998 and worked throughout the 1998-2000 armed conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia and beyond, protecting and assisting people affected by the conflict.

Geneva (ICRC) - The Eritrean authorities have informed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that it will no longer be involved in any repatriation of Ethiopians from the country. According to the authorities, this decision was motivated by the unilateral cancellation of two repatriation operations in late 2008 and early 2009 by Ethiopia.

Since 2000, more than 43,000 Ethiopian and Eritrean civilians wanting to return home have been repatriated to their respective countries, with due respect for their dignity, under ICRC auspices.

This number includes a former prisoner of war who recently requested to be repatriated. In the same operation, 10 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

Acting in its capacity as a neutral and independent intermediary, the ICRC carried out the repatriation based on the consent of each individual, and with the cooperation of the authorities on both sides of the border.

On 26 October 2007, 835 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

27 Jul 2007 description

On 27 July 2007, 576 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. Among those repatriated were 13 unaccompanied minors who joined their families in Ethiopia. In addition, 11 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

Acting in its capacity as a neutral and independent intermediary, the ICRC carried out the repatriation with the cooperation of the authorities on both sides of the border.

26 Jan 2007 description

A total of 372 civilians have been repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC.

The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC delegation in Asmara on 26 January 2007

Amongst those repatriated to rejoin their families were 14 unaccompanied minors and 1 medical case. In the same operation, 18 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

Addis Ababa (ICRC) - On 30 June 2006, 47 Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The group crossed the border at the Mereb River bridge, located between the towns of Adi Quala in Eritrea, and Rama in Ethiopia.

11 Nov 2005 description

298 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. The group included 8 unaccompanied minors, 2 elderly persons and 2 sick persons who were returning home to their families. As part of the same operation, 15 Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea. This group included 4 unaccompanied minors who were also returning home to their families.

Acting in its capacity as a neutral and independent intermediary, the ICRC repatriated both groups with the cooperation of the authorities.

A total of 163 Eritrean and five Ethiopian civilians were repatriated to their respective countries under ICRC auspices on 10 June. Among the repatriated were unaccompanied minors, elderly or sick persons and people particularly vulnerable for other reasons.

Acting in its capacity as a neutral and independent intermediary, the ICRC carried out this operation in accordance with its standard procedures.

On 26 November, 200 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border at the Mereb river bridge, between the towns of Adi Quala in Eritrea and Rama in Ethiopia. Among those repatriated were eight children and three sick persons returning to their families in Ethiopia.

Acting in its capacity as a neutral and independent intermediary, the ICRC carried out this operation with the cooperation of the authorities.

On 19 March, 81 Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. The group included a medical case and 12 unaccompanied children who were later reunited with their families.

Last Friday, 77 Eritrean civilians returned from Ethiopia to Eritrea under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb River, between the towns of Rama in Ethiopia and Adi Quala on the Eritrean side. Those repatriated included four minors, who are now back with their families.

24 Oct 2003 description

On 24 October, 194 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea under ICRC auspices. The group, which included 10 children being reunited with their families, crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb river between the towns of Adi Quala, on the Eritrean side, and Rama, in Ethiopia.
