Assab, 6 July 2011 – The displaced nationals due to volcanic eruption would be rehabilitated in places of their choice, stated the Administrator of Southern Red Sea region, Mr. Ali Mahommed.

He told ERINA that the nationals were engaged in pastoral activities in semi-highland localities, but, the place is currently covered with melting rock. Hence they would be rehabilitated in sites where they can obtain access to social service.

Addis Ababa, 24 June 2010 - In what was described as "a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the newly arrived Somali refugees" the Commission of the African Union (AU) today donated US$ 50,000 worth of non-food items to UNHCR in support of newly arrived Somali refugees. In a statement sent to UNHCR, the AU expressed appreciation for the assistance rendered by the UNHCR and humanitarian actors to the refugees.

Two Eritrean rebel groups said on Friday they have killed 25 government soldiers and wounded at least 38 others, in ambushes on two military camps.

Rebel spokesman Yasin Mohamed said the attacks by the Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) and the Eritrean Salvation Front (ESF) rebels were in retaliation for the repression of the Afar minority and others by the government.

The Horn of Africa has again been hit by famine and drought. Norway has allocated NOK 50 million in emergency relief to the people living in the region.

The allocation will be channelled through the UN, the Red Cross and other NGOs, and will be used to meet immediate needs.

Norway's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, commented: "It is vital to focus more closely on political solutions for this region. Horn of Africa receives 40% of all international food aid.

With five new financial decisions, the European Commission is providing a total of €54 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable people in Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and Uganda. The funds are channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department under the direct responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
