1. The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1369 (2001) of 14 September 2001, which extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) until 15 March 2002. It provides an update on political, military, humanitarian and human rights developments, as well as on the deployment and activities of UNMEE since my report of 5 September 2001 (S/2001/843).

NAIROBI, 11 December (IRIN) - The border commission charged with reaching mutual agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea on the demarcation of their common border began hearing the cases of the two countries in the Hague on Monday. The deputy ambassador at the Eritrean embassy in Nairobi told IRIN on Tuesday that the Eritrean Foreign Minister Ali Sayyid Abdallah had addressed the panel yesterday and that the presentation of the Eritrean case would continue today. "By the end of today Eritrea's case will have been heard," said the deputy ambassador.

NAIROBI, 3 December (IRIN) - The Eritrean Foreign Minister has said that the Eritrea-Ethiopia border commission will give its final verdict on the demarcation of the disputed border line in February 2002, the Eritrean News Agency reported on Saturday. Ali Sayyid Abdallah told the news agency before he departed for Japan to attend the Afro-Japan cooperation conference in Tokyo, that the verdict would grant no right of appeal and would therefore be binding.

NAIROBI, 29 November (IRIN) - The United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) Force Commander on Wednesday reiterated a firm denial of recent statements made by the Eritrean and Ethiopian governments accusing each other of destabilising the peace process. Maj-Gen Patrick Cammaert told the 10th meeting of the Military Coordination Commission (MCC) that, despite the recent allegations, the situation within the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ) remains calm.
