GENEVA - UNHCR announced on Wednesday that it is ending refugee status for all Eritreans who fled their country as a result of the war of independence or the recent border conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The world-wide cessation will take effect on December 31 and will affect hundreds of thousands of Eriteans in neighbouring countries.

UNHCR and the Eritrean Relief and Refugee Commission have reported a sharp rise in the number of refugee returns to Eritrea immediately following the end of Ramadan. In the single largest voluntary repatriation convoy to date, 3,155 refugees returned on 31 December. In the five border crossings so far since 1 January 2002, more than 5,200 refugees have chosen to return home.
