New Arrivals: According to the data compiled by the UNHCR and partners during the month of September 2012, an estimated 8,382 people arrived on Yemen’s shores, with the largest movement of 5,530 people moving from Djibouti, representing 66% of the total arrivals.

General Situation

Somalia is the country generating the highest number of refugees in the world, after Afghanistan and Iraq. As of the end of April 2011 there were 732,107 Somali refugees, mainly hosted in Kenya, Yemen, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Tanzania and Uganda and almost 1.5 million Somalis internally displaced within the country, settled mainly in the South-Central region.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Many parts of the Horn of Africa (HOA) continue to suffer under a precarious security situation coupled with susceptibility to harsh climatic conditions. Sporadic violence and prolonged drought conditions continue to strain the coping mechanisms of millions of people in the regio. An estimated 19.8 million people are in need of emergency assistance in the HOA. The humanitarian situation remains critical in parts of Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.
