Executive Summary

The Horn of Africa (HOA), composed of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, suffers frequent natural disasters that commonly result in losses of life, destruction of infrastructure, and reduction of agricultural production. Formulating effective contingencies to respond to such emergencies is constrained by a limited understanding of the likelihood of a natural hazard occurring within a particular region and risks associated with that hazard.

ADDIS ABABA, Sept 24, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Eastern Africa Locust Control Organization has made ready 3 planes to control possible desert locust infestation, Ethiopian media reported Friday.

The organization's director, Peter O. Odiyo, told the ministerial meeting that began here on Thursday that the planes will be employed to control the desert locust infestation feared to surface in the region as swarms are stretching eastward from countries in western Africa and the Red Sea areas.
