Food security conditions precarious in two pastoral zones

Poor March to April rains (Sougoum/Diraac) followed by the failure of the main inland July - September rains (Karan/Karma) have threatened the food security of around 2,000 families in the Southeast Pastoral Border Sub-Zone and the Northwest Pastoral Zone of Djibouti (See map below). Prospects are not promising for the Karan/Karma-dependent areas (the interior plans and highlands), which face a six month dry season before the next rainy season resumes in April 2005.

ADDIS ABABA, Sept 24, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Eastern Africa Locust Control Organization has made ready 3 planes to control possible desert locust infestation, Ethiopian media reported Friday.

The organization's director, Peter O. Odiyo, told the ministerial meeting that began here on Thursday that the planes will be employed to control the desert locust infestation feared to surface in the region as swarms are stretching eastward from countries in western Africa and the Red Sea areas.

CCA Guidance for East and Northeast Africa Rainfall in March-May 2004 at One Month Lead
Northeast Africa is defined here as the region between 5N and 20N; 20-50E. The prediction for Mar-Apr-May 2004 rainfall at one month lead (neafMAM1.gif) essentially calls for climatology over the region with some very weak signals of higher than climatological probability for rainfall in the area of Djibouti.
