Brussels, 18 December 2012

The European Union's Nobel Peace prize money will fund four projects under the EU Children of Peace initiative and details of the projects were announced today by Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission.

The attribution of the award money to children affected by conflict was an unanimous decision of the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Parliament Martin Schulz and of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

This month’s Conflict Trends report is the fifth in a series of publications by the Armed Conflict Location &Event Dataset which report and analyse realtime conflict data from across the African continent.

This issue will focus on developments in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia and Sudan. Realtime data for the month of July is presented for each of these countries, and compared with historical trends to identify profiles and patterns in the geography, agents and modalities of violence in each case.

The Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), meeting in its 139th Session, has approved 13 loans and grants totaling nearly US$66 million to boost socio-economic development in over 34 partner countries. It is estimated that in 2010 there were 216 million cases of malaria, resulting in 655,000 deaths. 81% of these cases and 91% of deaths happened in Africa. Across the globe, 86% of victims were under 5 years old.

Thanks to the efforts of communities in affected areas and their international partners, malaria deaths have fallen by 25% since the year 2000. As the world’s largest donor of development assistance, the EU is at the forefront of ensuring that this progress continues. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for example, notable results have been achieved.

Based on data received from the Early Warning System through the Event Management System, 15 public health events were reported to the Regional Office covering the period 01 January - 29 February 2012 of which 73% were due to infectious diseases.
