New IRC research: pre-teen and teenage girls in humanitarian settings overwhelmingly suffer abuse by people they know

IRC calls for more humanitarian programming focused on pre-teen and teenage girls.

  • Research indicates girls as young as 10 are experiencing high levels of violence.

  • More than half surveyed in DRC (61%) and Ethiopia (52%) reported physical, sexual, or emotional violence in the past 12 months, overwhelmingly by people they know.

The European Union's Nobel Peace prize money will fund four projects under the EU Children of Peace initiative and details of the projects were announced today by Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission.

The attribution of the award money to children affected by conflict was an unanimous decision of the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Parliament Martin Schulz and of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

Five years ago, on 15 December 2005, the General Assembly established the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), a humanitarian fund with a grant component of up to US$450 million and a loan component of $50 million.

WFP is currently feeding more than 14.5 million refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and returnees in some of the most dangerous and hard-to-reach parts of the globe.

In Pakistan, more than 2 million people have been displaced by fighting in the North West Frontier Province. In Sri Lanka, recent conflict has made more than 270,000 people homeless. And in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 130,000 people have fled fighting in recent months.

In Darfur, about 2.5 million people were displaced by the conflict since 2003.

Executive Summary

President George W. Bush signed the Senator Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act of 2005 (the WfP Act) into law on December 1, 2005. The Act requires the Secretary of State, in consultation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other U.S. Government agencies, to develop and implement a strategy "to provide affordable and equitable access to safe water and sanitation in developing countries" within the context of sound water resources management.
