1) With seasonal rains ending and as vegetation dries out, locust swarms have formed in Chad and are expected to form shortly in Niger and Mali. Swarms are then expected to migrate towards the north as well as potentially into cropping areas in western/central Mali.

Mao and N´Djamena, Chad, 27 August 2012 - Silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics, two-time (United States) National Basketball Association champion and UNICEF Spain Ambassador Pau Gasol is in Chad to visit with children and families affected by the food and nutrition crisis in the Sahel.

In Chad, more than 127,000 children are at serious risk of severe malnutrition. They fight to survive in the midst of a crisis caused by prolonged drought and rising food prices.

LONDON (AlertNet) – Chad, again on the brink of a food crisis, will keep lurching from one emergency to another unless donors overcome their “repetitive amnesia” on the country and tackle chronic malnutrition there, International Medical Corps (IMC) warns.

Aid groups have warned that hunger threatens between 5 and 9 million people in countries in Africa's Sahel region just below the Sahara including Chad, Niger, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Mali.

9 December 2011 – Three more countries in the so-called “meningitis belt” stretching across Africa will this month introduce a new vaccine designed to eliminate a particular strain of the often deadly disease, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) reported today.

Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad will vaccinate millions of their citizens with MenAfriVac, which was created to target Group A meningitis, responsible for millions of cases in sub-Saharan Africa over the past century.

The conflict that began in Libya on 17 February 2011 with a popular revolt against Gaddafi’s regime has triggered a mass exodus of the civilian population into neighbouring countries. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled, mainly into Tunisia and Egypt, as a result of attacks by Gaddafi’s forces on civilian populations, the rebellion and NATO bombings. Migrant workers and refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa have been particular targets of violence.

Tunisie - Les mineurs non accompagnés et les enfants migrants séparés de leurs parents sont exposés aux risques de maltraitance, d'exploitation et de violence en recherchant la sécurité dans les camps de déplacés à la frontière entre la Tunisie et la Libye.

Avec le soutien du personnel de l'OIM à la frontière, l'UNICEF a identifié plus de 150 enfants depuis les premiers jours de la crise en Libye lorsque les migrants ont fui en grand nombre vers les pays voisins.

Unaccompanied minors and child migrants separated from their parents are at risk of abuse, exploitation and violence as they seek safety in the camps for the displaced on the Tunisian-Libyan border.

UNICEF, with the support of IOM staff at the border, say that more than 150 children have been identified since the early days of the crisis in Libya when large numbers of migrants fled to neighbouring countries.

· Unconfirmed estimates indicate that clashes that began on June 6 in Southern Kordofan State between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) have displaced up to 53,000 people, according to the U.N. Humanitarian agencies have provided assistance in accessible areas of the state, but insecurity has constrained aid delivery. Many non-governmental organization (NGO) and U.N. staff have relocated from the area due to ongoing insecurity.

- Thousands of individuals continue to return by road, rail, barge, and plane from northern Sudan to their homelands in Southern Sudan and the Three Areas of Southern Kordofan, Blue Nile, and Abyei. As of December 28, relief agencies had verified the return of 105,334 people in government-organized and spontaneous movements since October 30.

Executive Summary

This report evaluates DFID's Humanitarian Assistance spending during the financial year 2009/10. The report does not include a breakdown of the UK contribution (13%) to the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO) which spent €930 million on Humanitarian assistance during 2009. Excluding ECHO contributions, the report finds that DFID spent £428 million on humanitarian assistance during 2009/10 which was 6.3%% of the DFID programme.

Summary

The Desert Locust (SGR1) activities increased in November in Sudan where ground operations controlled various instar hopper bands and adult groups in more than 6,900 ha in the Northern, the River Nile, Khartoum and Red Sea States. Some adults moved to the northeast of the country and laid eggs while a few crossed the Red Sea and reached northeastern coast of Saudi Arabia on November 30th. Breeding continued in northwestern Mauritania where control operations treated 400 ha.

La situation relative au Criquet pèlerin reste préoccupante au Soudan. Malgré les efforts en lutte du mois de novembre, des ailés ont formé de petits groupes qui se sont déplacés vers le nord-est du Soudan o=F9 ils ont pondu, tandis que plusieurs autres groupes ont traversé la mer Rouge en direction de la côte septentrionale de l'Arabie saoudite. Si de bonnes pluies tombent dans ces deux pays, les effectifs acridiens pourraient augmenter rapidement et menacer la région.

Convention on Cluster Munitions promoted at UN disarmament discussions

A special event on the Convention on Cluster Munitions took place on 19 October 2010 in New York during the UN First Committee on Disarmament and International Security.
