In December of this year, UNHCR will mark its 60th birthday. Next year we will celebrate that same anniversary for the 1951 Refugee Convention, as well as the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

Programme Summary:

The first six months of 2010 were characterized by two major earthquake events in Haiti and Chile that required a massive response effort, leveraging the full range of the Movement's disaster response resources, as well as its global coordination and technical assistance capacities. The response operations both demonstrated IFRC's capacity to scale up quickly through the deployment of a focused and flexible global surge capacity.

Banjul, 10 November 2009 - The Third Conference of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), which started on Sunday, 8 November, 2009, in Banjul; Gambia, ended today, Tuesday, 10 November 2009, with constructive conclusions and recommendations to promote and support NHRIs in Africa.

The meeting noted that since the last Conference held in 2004, NHRIs had made significant progress in promoting and protecting human rights in Africa through activities such as capacity building, advocacy and counseling.

ADDRESSING CHALLENGES OF AFRICAN NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS

Banjul, November 8, 2009 - At the Third Conference of African National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) which started, today, Sunday, 8 November 2009, in Banjul, Republic of Gambia, representatives of National Human Rights Institutions have shared experiences, challenges and opportunities with a view to improving capacity building and enhancing or reinforcing their mandates.

On challenges, the representatives of the NHRIs agreed that funding and staffing levels had an effect on their work.

Summary

Desert Locust activities increased in western Mauritania in October. Survey and control teams from the National Locust Control Centre (CNLA) controlled second generation hoppers and adults on some 4,214 ha during this month (close to 4,280 ha have been treated since the current control operations began on September 11). Survey and control operations are in progress in Mauritania and neighboring countries are on the look out.

WASHINGTON, DC - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on Friday welcomed major US government contributions for August totaling US$69 million, aimed at feeding people in seven countries confronting humanitarian challenges ranging from severe drought to civil conflict.

The latest donations, from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), bring total American contributions to WFP operations for the fiscal year to US$905 million. The United States is WFP's single largest donor.

United Nations Humanitarian Chief to Visit Uganda

John Holmes, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, is expected to undertake his second mission to Africa since taking office on 1 March 2007, including visits to OCHA offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Uganda.

While in Uganda, John Holmes is expected to meet with senior Government officials and members of the United Nations and wider humanitarian community.

Chad: Civil insecurity in eastern Chad is putting the large Darfurian refugee population at increased risk. In southern Chad, the food and non-food needs of a growing number of refugees from Central African Republic are not being met.

Djibouti: Therapeutic feeding and health centers have been overwhelmed by the growing number of sick and malnourished people.
