As Sudan has entered the final and most critical year of its post-war transition period, the other countries comprising the Horn and central Africa are on the alert. Southern Sudan's self-determination referendum, scheduled for January 2011, could result in partition of the country and may possibly prompt the resurgence of violent North-South conflict. In any case, the emergence of an independent South would have profound regional implications.

Durant les deux dernières semaines il y a eu des accrochages ethno réligieux au Nord du Nigeria et un glissement de terrain en Ouganda. Les tensions socio politiques en Côte d'Ivoire et au Togo se sont apaisées. La crise chronique dans l'est de la RDC aussi bien que plusieurs épidémies continuent. Les Etats Membres reçoivent l'appui de l'OMS pour la réponse principalement à travers les clusters santé.

General Context

In the past two weeks there have been ethno-religious clashes in Northern Nigeria and mud slide in Uganda. The socio-political political tensions in Côte d'Ivoire and Togo have eased. Protracted crises in Eastern DRC as well as several disease outbreaks are still ongoing. There is also high alert in Mozambique regarding the flood situation. Member states are receiving support from WHO for response mainly through the Health Clusters.

Cette semaine les préoccupations majeures sur la scène socio politique sont le coup d'état militaire au Niger, la détérioration continuelle de la situation politique en Côte d'Ivoire et les crises chroniques dans l'est de la RDC. The major concerns in the socio-political scene this week are the military coup in Niger, the continued deteriorating political and social situation in Côte d'Ivoire and the protracted crises in the eastern DRC. In addition, the usual events including several disease outbreaks are ongoing. Member states are receiving support from WHO for response mainly through the Health Clusters.

General Context

The socio-political situation in Côte d'Ivoire has this week been marked by a flaring up of social unrests in several parts of the country. This is a result of dispute between the opposition parties and the group of the President following the dissolution of the Government and Independent Electoral Commission by the President last week. Insecurity in eastern DRC has not changed. In addition, the usual crises including several disease outbreaks are ongoing. Member states are receiving support from WHO for response mainly through the Health Clusters.

General Context

The Pandemic A (H1N1) incidence has drastically decreased and is no longer alarming in our Region. In total 32 countries have officially reported 17,128 laboratory confirmed human cases including 167 deaths. Since the beginning of this year we continued to face various acute crises. In addition, the year 2010 is carrying the legacy of all the protracted crises which are still ongoing. This issue of our weekly bulletin will make a retrospective update on January 2010 humanitarian events. The usual Weekly Emergency Situation Update will start next week.

L'incidence de la Pandémie A (H1N1) a radicalement baissé et n'est plus alarmante dans notre Région. Au total 32 pays ont officiellement notifié 17 128 cas humains confirmés au laboratoire avec 167 décès. Depuis le début de cette année nous continuons de faire face à diverses crises aiguës. En plus, l'année 2010 a hérité de toutes les crises chroniques toujours en cours. Ce numéro de notre bulletin hebdomadaire fait une mise à jour rétrospective des évènements humanitaires de janvier 2010.
