Approximately 465,000 Sudanese were refugees or asylum seekers at the end of 2000: some 200,000 in Uganda, about 70,000 in Ethiopia, an estimated 70,000 in Congo-Kinshasa, at least 55,000 in Kenya, 35,000 in Central African Republic, about 20,000 in Chad, some 12,000 in Egypt, and nearly 2,000 new Sudanese asylum applicants in Europe.

At least 3,500 people have died in the worst outbreak of meningoccal meningitis to sweep sub-Saharan Africa in the last decade. From the Red Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, a total of 38,000 cases have been documented but many more are likely to have gone unreported, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Burkina Faso: WHO has reported a total of 10 897 cases, including 1525 deaths between 1 January-15 April 2001. With funding from the European Commission through its Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), Médecins sans Frontières (MSF Belgium) and Pharmaciens sans Frontières are providing support to the response in some districts. The ICG has released a further 900 000 doses of vaccine to WHO to continue the mass vaccination campaigns in the most affected areas.

(Bamako, Mali: 14 February 2001) The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) today called on all countries of Africa to join, implement and comply with the international treaty banning antipersonnel mines (the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty) at the opening of a two-day regional governmental meeting on landmines in Bamako, Mali.
