UNHCR operational highlights

  • UNHCR opened two new transit centers (one in Cishemere in the province of Cibitoke, one in Kajaga in the Mairie of Bujumbura) and one new refugee camp (in Kavumu in the province of Cankuzo) to accommodate new arrivals from DRC. The new camp has a capacity of 13 000 persons and should accommodate 5 000 refugees by the end of 2013. It will be inaugurated on the 15th of May 2013.

Kenya calls for collective efforts to resolve Somali crisis: Kenya on Tuesday 17th August called on the international community to find ways of addressing the political instability in wartorn Somalia.

During a meeting with the UN Special Representative for Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, Kenya's Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula Moses Wetangula said that the situation in Somalia cannot be addressed solely by an institution or an individual, and called for an comprehensive plan of action by the various stakeholders.

Political, Social and Economic Developments within the last week

Negotiations between church leaders and the Government on the contentious issues in the draft constitution collapsed after the government delegation was bound by a cabinet decision ruling out any amendments prior to the referendum. The contentious issues concern abortion, land policies and entrenchment of Islamic Courts in the constitution.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects Kenya's economy to grow at slightly more than four per cent this year and improve to nearly six per cent in 2011.

DECATUR, United States, July 28 (UNHCR) - The publically funded International Community School is located in the city of Decatur in Dekalb County, Georgia, one of the largest refugee resettlement areas in the United States. It was set up in 2002 to provide a top international primary education to a mix of US-born local children and young refugees and immigrants. One of the pupils, 4th Grader Genevieve Wilson from Liberia, won first prize this year in a UNHCR World Refugee Day poster contest sponsored by Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie.
