1. Sudan: violence puts stability at risk

On 9 January, the UN peacekeeping force in Sudan, UNMIS, voiced concern over the recent escalation of violence in Southern Sudan. In the last two weeks, more than 150 people have been killed, and many more injured and displaced by inter-ethnic violence throughout the autonomous region.

1. EASTERN AFRICA: FOOD CRISIS ON THE HORIZON

Droughts and increases in cereal and fuel prices have caused a serious food crisis in the region, JRS Eastern Africa Regional Advocacy and Policy Officer, Karen Monteiro, told Dispatches on 25 August. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has confirmed in early August that it will need an additional 400 million US dollars if a humanitarian crisis is to be averted.

UGANDA: GOVERNMENT AND REBELS SIGN PHASE TWO OF THE PEACE DEAL

On 2 May, the government of Uganda and the rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) signed an accord to extend the ceasefire and agreed phase two of a peace agreement. The previous ceasefire ended earlier this year on 28 February, creating instability and raising anxieties among the population in northern Uganda.

"News of the extension of the ceasefire brought relief to most, including the NGOs assisting internally displaced persons (IDPs).
