Displacement and conflict

Around 1.542 million people are internally displaced in South Sudan, and over 546,000 have crossed borders and become refugees. About 106,228 people have fled Burundi, and about 25,000 have left Yemen (where 1 million people are internally displaced)3 for Djibouti and Somalia. Areas of conflict in South Sudan and Yemen remain very difficult for humanitarian organizations to access, pushing more to cross borders in search of assistance.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • South Africa, Kenya and AU put forward own peace plans and initiatives for South Sudan in addition to new IGAD proposal.

  • Fighting in South Sudan now affecting five out of the ten states. Over 28,000 South Sudanese refugees (a 40 per cent increase since April) received in neighbouring countries in the last two months.

  • Food security expected to deteriorate in eastern parts of the Horn region from JuneAugust while average August harvests are expected in the western sector of the Horn.

Following a recent promise made by Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Adhanom on a visit to Bujumbura, Ethiopia has sent aid materials to support rehabilitation of flood victims in Burundi. The material included 50,000 corrugated iron sheets, 5,000 blankets and other household utensils, amounting to a value of 12 million Ethiopian Birr. The material is being transported in Ethiopian Air Force planes.

The IFRC Regional Representation for Eastern Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, as part of the IFRC Africa Zone, supports National Societies (NS) to train and mobilise volunteers to respond to emergencies and to make communities more resilient to risks. Meeting in its 146th Session, the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved financing of nearly US$264 million to boost socio-economic development in over 30 partner countries. Of the new commitments, over US$193m will support 10 public sector loans and nine grants. The bulk of the public sector funding will co-finance agriculture, transportation, education, energy, health and water supply and sanitation projects.
