MAG and CWMD - MAG uses the term Conventional Weapons Management and Disposal (CWMD) to more accurately reflect the range of munitions it encounters in support of stockpile management, as in many of its projects items outside of the SALW definition are dealt with, such as aircraft bombs, large calibre artillery, mortar ammunition and rockets.

MAG is currently undertaking CWMD projects in Burundi, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Republic of Congo (RoC), Iraq, Somalia and Sudan.

Executive summary

The Eastern Africa Zone covers 14 National Societies (NS) - Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The Zone has four country representations in Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia and two Sub Zones covering the Indian Ocean Islands and East Africa countries.

The Eastern Africa Zone continues to experience major disasters which claim many lives, destroy property and erode the already weak livelihoods of the communities affected.

Kenya and Eritrea face reduced yields of respectively -7% and -4% relative to the 5 yr average. In Sudan water availability has increased past half month and better growing conditions are seen in Darfur and Kordofan. In the regions south of Lake Victoria, yield decreases (-15%) are expected in the east of Burundi and the north of Tanzania. Slightly above average yields are predicted for Rwanda and south Uganda.

MAG and CWMD - As the scale of the Conventional Weapons Management and Disposal (CWMD)(2) problem has become apparent across the world, MAG has been increasingly involved in addressing the threat posed by these items. The illicit proliferation of conventional weapons (CW) prolongs conflicts, causes instability, undermines development, and is now well established as the leading threat to human security globally. MAG is currently undertaking CWMD projects in Burundi, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Iraq, Somalia, Sudan and Vietnam.

1. EASTERN AFRICA: FOOD CRISIS ON THE HORIZON

Droughts and increases in cereal and fuel prices have caused a serious food crisis in the region, JRS Eastern Africa Regional Advocacy and Policy Officer, Karen Monteiro, told Dispatches on 25 August. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has confirmed in early August that it will need an additional 400 million US dollars if a humanitarian crisis is to be averted.
