These crises included the massive onslaught of Russian forces against Georgian forces, the Sri Lankan government forces against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels, Israeli forces against the forces of Hamas, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) government forces against the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) forces of rebel leader, General Laurent Nkunda.

1. EASTERN AFRICA: FOOD CRISIS ON THE HORIZON

Droughts and increases in cereal and fuel prices have caused a serious food crisis in the region, JRS Eastern Africa Regional Advocacy and Policy Officer, Karen Monteiro, told Dispatches on 25 August. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has confirmed in early August that it will need an additional 400 million US dollars if a humanitarian crisis is to be averted.
