The synthesis report by FAO’s Monitoring African Food and Agricultural Policies (MAFAP) team, is the first ever attempt to systematically analyse agriculture and food security policies in several African countries, using common methodology over years. The report found that in the period between 2005 and 2010, the policy environment and performance of domestic markets depressed producer prices in the ten African countries analysed, though the trend is improving.

Thirty-one food insecure nations need emergency assistance

Rome, 10 November 2009 - Food prices in poor countries that are net importers of food still remain stubbornly high despite a good 2009 world cereal production, FAO warned today in its latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation report.

The report was published ahead of the Rome World Summit on Food Security to be held in Rome on November 16-18.

Critical food insecurity is affecting 31 countries and they therefore require emergency assistance.

Forecast growth in 2008 cereal production could ease tight global supply

Rome, 11 April 2008 - The cereal import bill of the world's poorest countries is forecast to rise by 56 percent in 2007/2008. This comes after a significant increase of 37 percent in 2006/2007, FAO said today.

For low-income food-deficit countries in Africa, the cereal bill is projected to increase by 74 percent, according to the UN agency's latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation report.

Agency has started to assess damage in affected countries - concern about climate change

Rome, 25 September 2007- FAO Director-General Dr Jacques Diouf pledged today that FAO will bring all its resources and experience to support flood-affected countries in Africain rehabilitating their damaged agricultural sector.

"FAO is making every effort to immediately assess the damage the floods have caused to farmers and their livelihoods and is mobilizing resources to assist them in resuming their farming activities," Dr Diouf said.
