Tragedy struck migrants trying to cross from the Horn of Africa to find employment in Yemen and the Gulf, when their vessel capsized in high waves as it approached its destination in the early hours of 6 June.

UN Migration Agency staff were on the scene providing assistance to the traumatized survivors. IOM staff reported that 46 migrants had drowned, 37 men and 9 women. A further 16 remain missing, presumed dead.

30 May 2018 description

Hudaydah – Yesterday (29/05), IOM, the UN Migration Agency, helped some 101 Ethiopian migrants leave Yemen through Hudaydah Port as clashes grew closer to the area. The migrants are currently travelling via the Gulf of Aden to Djibouti, which they will transit through on their way home to Ethiopia. IOM is providing transport assistance at all stages of the journey in cooperation with its Government partners.

KEY ISSUES:

• The humanitarian community is responding to needs following an escalation in fighting on the west coast.

• Humanitarian responses to the impact of Cyclone ‘Mekunu’ have been scaled up on Socotra Island.

• Deconfliction notifications submitted by OCHA on behalf of UN agencies to the Evacuation and Humanitarian Operations Committee (EHOC) have reached 10,000 since 2015.

• The first containerized cargo vessel to be granted access to Al Hudaydah port since November 2017 arrived on 26 May.

• Despite ongoing conflict, humanitarian access to parts of Al-Wazi’iyah and Mawza districts in Taizz Governorate has improved, including from Aden and Al-Turbah City.

• Hundreds of families have fled military operations in Altuhayat District, Al Hudaydah Governorate, with an estimated 705 arriving in Zabid and Al-Garrahi districts.

• Heavy rains affected several governorates in the southern coastal areas as Cyclone Sagar passed the Gulf of Aden, but minimal damage was reported.

  • Provided healthcare assistance to 136,108 IDPs and other conflict affected Yemenis and 13,712 migrants between January and April 2018, including 10,375 Yemenis and 578 migrants during the reporting week. Healthcare services were provided through 47 IOM-supported healthcare facilities.

Sana'a – Following a visit to Yemen this week (02-06/05) Mohammed Abdiker, Director of Operations and Emergencies at IOM, the UN Migration Agency, said that he is "extremely concerned about the appalling and inhumane situation migrants are facing in Yemen" and called for "greater support and protection both from the international community and authorities in-country."

Despite increasing hostilities and access challenges, UNHCR provided life-saving assistance to refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons during the first quarter of 2018.

An estimated 100,000 individuals have been newly displaced in the past four months, with an increase in protection and shelter needs of IDP families fleeing frontline hostilities.

UNHCR-assisted return for Somali refugees in Yemen to Somalia continued in 2018 bringing the total number of Somalis voluntarily returning to 1,630.

Along the Eastern Route (between the Horn of Africa and Yemen)

At the beginning of 2017, movement from Yemen was primarily influenced by the ongoing conflict that left approximately 2 million internally displaced people. However, the numbers of migrants arriving into Yemen from the Horn of Africa via the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden, were slightly lower than in 2016 particularly along the Red Sea route due to reports of deportations from Yemen.

This snapshot presents an overview of findings from June through December 2017, focussing on how gender influences migration experiences.

This snapshot examines what 4Mi Phase 2 data reveals about why and how women migrate and how gender impacts on conditions along the route. The data draws on interviews with 165 women and 340 men on the move from Horn of Africa.
