KEY ISSUES:

• The humanitarian community is responding to needs following an escalation in fighting on the west coast.

• Humanitarian responses to the impact of Cyclone ‘Mekunu’ have been scaled up on Socotra Island.

• Deconfliction notifications submitted by OCHA on behalf of UN agencies to the Evacuation and Humanitarian Operations Committee (EHOC) have reached 10,000 since 2015.

• The first containerized cargo vessel to be granted access to Al Hudaydah port since November 2017 arrived on 26 May.

KEY ISSUES:

• Despite ongoing conflict, humanitarian access to parts of Al-Wazi’iyah and Mawza districts in Taizz Governorate has improved, including from Aden and Al-Turbah City.

• Hundreds of families have fled military operations in Altuhayat District, Al Hudaydah Governorate, with an estimated 705 arriving in Zabid and Al-Garrahi districts.

• Heavy rains affected several governorates in the southern coastal areas as Cyclone Sagar passed the Gulf of Aden, but minimal damage was reported.

Highlights

  • On 10 December, the Task Force on Population Movement (TFPM), led by UNHCR and IOM, validated in its 6th report that there are 2,509,062 internally displaced persons in Yemen.

  • UNHCR participated in a mission to Ibb from 14 to 31 December, which focused on developing the capacity of partners in Ibb, including trainings on needs assessment, vulnerability criteria, distribution methodologies and post distribution monitoring.

  • To date, over 580,000 IDPs and conflict-affected persons have benefitted from IOM’s WASH activities in nine governorates in Yemen. On average, 15 liters of water per day are available per person from IOM's activities.

  • As of 6 January, over 63,00 IDPs and conflict-affected persons in Yemen, and over 9,500 migrants have benefitted from IOM’s health assistance in eight governorates.

Situation Overview

Airstrikes, shelling and armed clashes continue in the country particularly in Al Bayda, Dhamar, Ibb, Al Jawf Marib, Sana’a, Sadah, and Taizz.

On 8 December, Yemen's government said the country's warring sides are preparing to observe a week-long truce from 15 December while UN-mediated peace talks take place in Switzerland.

Highlights

  • Since April, 53,269 IDPs and conflicict- affected persons in Abyan, Aden, Al Dhale’e, Hajjah, Al Hudaydah, Sana’a, Shabwah and Socotra Island have been provided with health assistance including emergency and primary health care.

  • IOM continues to provide life-saving assistance in response to Cyclones Chapala and Megh. Distribu on of shelter and non-food items kits, and provision of health assistance and water trucking services to IDPs and affected communities in Socotra Island, Abyan and Shabwah continues.

Highlights

  • As part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence campaign IOM’s Protection and Assistance Unit will be distributing brochures and conduct awareness-raising sessions, targeting 100 college students throughout the 16 day period.

  • To date, IOM in Djibouti has assisted over 4,500 migrants with emergency shelter, food, NFIs, medical assistance and Onward Transportation Assistance (OTA).

KEY MESSAGES

  • Almost 6,000 families across six governorates have been displaced by the impact of the two cyclones.

  • The majority are located in the governorates of Socotra, Hadramaut and Shabwah.

  • Socotra Island is still facing electricity and water shortages, with many displaced families still sheltering in public buildings and tents. Local authorities are calling for additional assistance.

Highlights

  • Since April, IOM has assisted 2,060 migrants, including 90 resettlement cases to Sweden and France to leave Yemen by air, and has also organized 12 boat rotations evacuating a total of 2,257 migrants by sea.

  • In response to Cyclones Chapala and Megh, IOM is transporting 100 Non-Food Item kits containing mattresses, blankets, and cooking equipment to Shabwah governorate, which will be distributed to 700 displaced persons.

  • IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix team in Yemen has identified 410 IDP households (approximately 2,870 individuals) in Hadhramaut and Shabwah governorates, and Socotra Island who were affected by Cyclone Chapala. IOM has started water trucking services in Mayfa'a district,
    Shabwah governorate.

  • Since the beginning of the crisis, over 186,500 individuals in nine governorates have benefitted from IOM’s WASH activities.
