Sana’a—The two-and-a-half-year-old conflict in Yemen has left a catastrophe. The crisis has continued to deteriorate following last month’s escalation of fighting in the north, as well as explosions in the south.

Essential services have collapsed and approximately 75 per cent of Yemenis need humanitarian assistance. A cholera outbreak has affected 21 of the 22 Governorates, while only 50 per cent of health facilities remain functioning in the country.

IOM’s DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) was launched in Yemen in April, 2015 in an effort to better inform the humanitarian community about the location and needs of the displaced populations in Yemen. By the end of 2016, as part of DTM activities, IOM began implementing Flow Monitoring (FM) assessments in order to monitor the human mobility of other country nationals in Yemen. The objective of this report is to present the findings of the FM assessments with the aim to better inform the humanitarian community and those responding in the region.

The Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat (RMMS) launched the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi) in 2014. This innovative tool aims to address the need for better data in a context where irregular movements are changing rapidly and where people and smugglers move in increasingly clandestine ways.

RMMS launched Phase 2 of the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi) in June 2017. This snapshot presents an overview of findings from June 2017 through September 2017.

DATA COLLECTION ON MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENT IN THE HORN OF AFRICA AND IN THE ARAB PENINSULA

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has established a range of Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) data collection activities in areas of significant migratory transit and displacement in the Horn of Africa and in the Arab Peninsula.

Flow monitoring points (FMPs) are being established to collect data in order to provide a better understanding of intra and inter-regional migration patterns and trends.

Missions took place across Yemen, responding to an increase in protection and shelter needs of IDP families, 84% of whom have been displaced for over one year.

The first UNHCR-assisted return movement for Somali refugees in Yemen to Somalia took place in September.

The war in Yemen, now in its third year, is exacting an unacceptably high toll on civilians, including on refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons.

Despite the challenging operational environment, UNHCR continues to reach populations with much needed lifesaving assistance countrywide.
