In 2015, significant migrant and refugee movements in the Horn of Africa placed strain on governments and humanitarian actors in the region. For the first time, complex flows of displaced individuals arrived in Djibouti, Somalia, and Ethiopia from Yemen.

Entrenched conflict and multiple failed peace accords framed the situation in Yemen and South Sudan. Environmental factors placed 10 million in need of emergency assistance in Ethiopia due to the worst drought in decades.

Highlights

  • On 10 December, the Task Force on Population Movement (TFPM), led by UNHCR and IOM, validated in its 6th report that there are 2,509,062 internally displaced persons in Yemen.

  • UNHCR participated in a mission to Ibb from 14 to 31 December, which focused on developing the capacity of partners in Ibb, including trainings on needs assessment, vulnerability criteria, distribution methodologies and post distribution monitoring.

Sana’a,August 2015 – Today UNHCR and its partner the Millennium Development Foundation (MDF) proudly celebrated the opening of the MDF Family Centre in Sana’a. With UNHCR support, the Family Centre provides refugee children with a safe environment to study and play. The Centre staff also accompany refugee children to help them address their legal, medical and psycho-­‐social needs.
By opening its doors also to vulnerable children in the host community the Centre facilitates co-­‐existence among the different nationalities and with the Yemeni host community.

  • This week the emergency committee of the International Health Regulations (IHR) is meeting for the sixth time to assess whether the international spread of polio continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

  • Despite the deteriorating security situation in Yemen, a humanitarian pause enabled 50,000 children to be reached with the oral polio vaccine during the final week of Ramadan. Read more

  • 24 July marked one year since a child was last paralyzed by wild poliovirus in Nigeria. Final laboratory results on all specimens for the full 12 month period are expected by September 2015, which, if clear for poliovirus, may lead to Nigeria being removed from the list of polio-endemic countries. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative commends the hard work of the Nigerian government, partners, religious and community leaders, and health workers for such strong progress towards stopping polio.
