FOREWORD

In a complex and fast-changing world, we remain focused and resolute in pursuit of our goal – to provide the most appropriate, effective medicine in the harshest of environments. As well as responding to vital needs, our aid is born of a desire to show solidarity with people who are suffering, whether as a result of conflict, neglect or disease.

THE ISSUE OF MENTAL HEALTH

The value of mental health in humanitarian settings is still underestimated. When War Trauma broaches the subject with our humanitarian partners we often find mental health comes as an afterthought. Even aft er twenty years, our task remains to convince aid workers and donors of the value of investing in a healthy mind in a healthy body.

President’s Malaria Initiative by the Numbers

Introduction

Despite remarkable progress in recent years, malaria remains a leading cause of sickness and death across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria disproportionately impacts the rural poor, typically people who must walk for miles to seek treatment. It is also a leading cause of absenteeism among employees, increased health care spending, decreased productivity, and approximately 50 percent of all preventable school absences in Africa. Malaria helps to trap families in a vicious cycle of disease and poverty.

Introduction

Driven by a combination of conflict, cyclic climatic and development shocks, and underpinned by poor governance, food insecurity, environmental degradation and poverty, displacement in East and Horn of Africa is consistently high, protracted and dynamic. At the end of October 2017, East Africa was home to over half of Africa’s internally displaced people (IDPs) and there were 13.1 million people displaced in the region- with the majority of displaced coming from or inside South Sudan and Somalia, and at least half are children.

They were lively and lovely, and they moved me close to tears. The Angolan teenaged girls I met told me about their dreams and the barriers they face to achieving what is simply normal elsewhere – finishing primary school, graduating from high school, protecting themselves from unplanned pregnancy and HIV, being safe from male aggression, living and loving in peace and harmony, and having a better future than their parents.

CAR

Renewed fighting and strengthened presence of armed groups in eastern prefectures of CAR, particularly in Basse-Kotto and Mbomou, have increased insecurity and limited humanitarian access since early 2018.

Fighting also continues in western CAR: repeated cycles of violence since October 2017 in Gamboula sub-prefecture have displaced some 21,700 people within the sub-prefecture, and affected populations in transhumance areas, including Nassole and Dilapoko.
