CAIRO, 7 October 2009 (IRIN) - Egypt's Delta region faces a natural disaster of massive proportions by 2020 unless urgent action is taken to better manage scarce fresh water resources and come up with solutions to mitigate the effects of rising sea levels, according to government officials.

The country is facing the dual threat of water needs surpassing resources by 2017, and rising sea levels in the decades ahead inundating much of the fertile Delta region, home to 60 percent of Egypt's 78 million people, it added.

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 4, 2007 (AFP) - Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni appealed Thursday for inter-Somali dialogue to help return stability in Somalia and urged the world community to only provide financial backing.

At a joint press conference with his host Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Museveni decried the world's neglect of Somalia, which has been wracked by violence since dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

"The international community is specialised in mediation, but Somalis can have their own dialogue," Museveni said.

NAIROBI, 24 January (IRIN) - Current food crop surpluses have helped improve the food security of important, vulnerable groups in Eastern Africa and the Horn of Africa in the short term, but could have serious negative effects later if farmers, reacting to lower prices, reduce the area planted with cereals, according to a new report from the Famine Early Warning System Network.
