People living in protracted displacement in Darfur since 2003 and those displaced or affected by conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States since 2011 account for most people in need of humanitarian aid.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Sudan hosts over 360,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen

• Influx from South Sudan continues, with 5,000 arrivals from Raja into East Darfur reported over the past week.

This vulnerability is primarily driven by conflict-induced displacement, and chronic food insecurity and malnutrition. Some 3.1 million people in Sudan are internally displaced; most in Darfur, while a further 0.7 million people are refugees displaced from their country of origin or South Sudanese who are unable to move to South Sudan.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Close to 37,000 Eritrean asylum seekers arrived in Europe between January and October 2014 via Sudan and Ethiopia, according to UNHCR.

• On average 1,000 refugees from South Sudan have been arriving in Sudan per week recently, UNHCR reports.

• SMoH and WHO report that 101 cases of hemorrhagic fever were registered in North Darfur and West Darfur since late August 2014.

The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has risen by half a million to 6.6 million people in the period between November 2013 and October 2014. These 6.6 million people in need consist of 3.1 million IDPs, 0.7 million refugees, and asylum seekers, 1.2 million malnourished children aged under five and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Needs are greatest in the Darfur region, Southern Sudan (South Kordofan, West Kordofan and Blue Nile States) and Eastern Sudan.

The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has risen by 800,000 since the start of 2014 (as of July 2014). This is in addition to some 6.1 million people who required humanitarian assistance at the start of 2014. These new humanitarian needs have primarily been generated by the displacement of over 400,000 people in Darfur, the arrival of almost 100,000 refugees from South Sudan and alarming levels of malnutrition, with the GAM rate for Sudan exceeding the 15% emergency threshold.

An estimated 6.9 million people need humanitarian assistance in Sudan. Most are in Darfur, where at least 2.4 million people are internally displaced. In the first half of 2014, an additional 399,000 people have been displaced following hostilities.
