Ottawa, Ontario―Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced 25 new initiatives to further Canada's support to Africa. Minister Oda referenced these projects in a recent speech delivered to African Heads of Missions meeting in Ottawa.

Summary The Desert Locust (SGR) situation remained relatively calm in July in the summer breeding areas in the Sahel, North Africa, Red Sea region and Southwest Asia. A few mature adults were seen in Sahel West Africa and the interior of Sudan and a similar situation may be present in western Eritrea.

There is a slight tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall over portions of eastern and central South Africa, and locally over northern and southern Angola. There is a low to moderate tilt in the odds favoring below normal rainfall across northern Mozambique, and the southern half of Malawi.

Comments on the Current Niger Weather Conditions:

2005 seasonal rainfall throughout much of Niger has been greater than normal, leading to very good agricultural conditions in most of the region. As a result Niger is not carried as a weather hazard. The current food security crisis in Niger is the result of various factors including an early end to the rainy season and locust infestations last year as well as high cereal prices this year.
