Introduction

Somalia has suffered extreme weather conditions (such as drought and floods) and conflict for decades. As a result, 2.6 million Somalis are internally displaced and 5 million are in need of food. In 2018, the EU has allocated €89 million to help those most in need. The delivery of cash assistance has proved to be an effective and dignified way of providing assistance to vulnerable people.

What are the needs?

Despite many odds, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) provided emergency assistance and durable solutions to more than 3 million people in the nine countries of the East Africa and Yemen programme.

In South Sudan, with more than 6 million people nationwide not having enough to eat, lack of access to food became the biggest crisis. In most parts of the country, people survived by eating wild fruits, cactus leaves, water lilies and other desperate survival tactics. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of people continued to flee the country to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.

Welcome to the August edition of the UN Migration Agency Bulletin for the East and Horn of Africa.
Like in many parts of the globe, migration continues to dominate debates in our region. On 6 August, IOM and its partners, launched a Regional Migrant Response Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. It is the first of such plan to be launched ever.

➢No new cVDPV2 isolates from environmental samples. The date of collection of most recent positive environmental sample was on 17th May 2018

➢No new cVDPV3 isolate from environmental samples. The date of collection of most recent positive environmental sample for cVDPV3 in Somalia was on 19th April 2018

➢In total, 10 cVDPV2 and seven (7) cVDPV3 viruses have been isolated from environmental samples in 2018 compared to two (2) VDPV2s and 0 VDPV3 in 2017

Our region has much to celebrate after the historic breakthrough in Ethiopia and Eritrea relations. The signing of a Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship by the leaders of the two countries, and the subsequent restoration of air services and phone links, we hope, will lead to the free movement of people across their borders.

This commitment makes Korea the first country to support outbreak response efforts in the region, critical to protecting global progress toward ending polio.

Reintegration Facility project launched in Somaliland

The European Union (EU)-funded "Reintegration Facility" project was launched on 24 April in Somaliland. The kick-off meeting event was hosted by the Somaliland Government, EU and IOM. The project will help migrants from Somaliland who have become stranded in African countries to return home voluntarily and reintegrate into their communities. It will also assist Ethiopians in Somaliland to return home and provide them with reintegration support.
