Summary

The present report has been prepared pursuant to General Assembly resolution 64/251, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to continue to improve the international response to natural disasters and to report thereon to the Assembly at its sixty-fifth session.

Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical health-related activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.

General Context

Pandemic A (H1N1): The overall decline in incidence continues. Twenty seven (27) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 14,109 and 102 deaths as of 27th October 2009. Other humanitarian concerns include political crises in Guinea and Niger, disease outbreaks, the complex emergencies in central African countries and the food crises in the horn of Africa.

Angola: The Governments of Angola and DRC decided to immediately stop the expulsion of citizens from the two countries.

Pandémie A (H1N1): Le nombre des cas confirmés a actuellement dépassé les 8 000 avec 40 décès au 8 septembre 2009. L'Afrique du Sud porte toujours le plus lourd fardeau avec 7 606 cas et 31 décès. Les inondations en Afrique de l'Ouest retiennent actuellement l'attention de la communauté humanitaire avec plus de 600 000 personnes touchées et près de 159 morts durant les trois derniers mois.

General Context

Pandemic A (H1N1): The number of confirmed cases has now reached over 8,000 with 40 deaths as of 8th September 2009. South Africa is still accounting for the bulk with 7,606 cases and 31 deaths. Floods in West Africa are retaining the attention of the humanitarian community with more than 600,000 people affected and about 159 deaths in the last three months.

Pandemic H1N1: The number of confirmed cases and countries affected is rapidly increasing in our Region. As of 13th of July 2009, a total of 116 confirmed cases without death were reported from 11 countries. AFRO maintains its call to the member states to intensify surveillance.

General Context

The number of confirmed cases of the pandemic Influenza A H1N1 is still increasing in our Region. As of 07th of July 2009, a total of 63 cases without death have been confirmed in eight countries. AFRO maintains its call to the member states for more vigilance on surveillance. The Cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is under control. We will be monitoring the floods in West Africa countries as we enter the rainy season.

Context

The global mobilization against the Influenza A H1N1 is still ongoing in our region. Many member states have activated their preparedness and response plan for the pandemic. So far there are no official reports of any confirmed case of the disease from any of the AFRO countries but suspected cases currently under investigation have been reported in three countries.

General Context

Floods in Southern and eastern Africa continue to be of high concern for both Governments and the Humanitarian communities. Other major concerns are ongoing outbreaks of diseases notably meningitis in the meningitis belt and Yellow fever in Lofa County in Libera.

Acute Crises

Angola: Torrential rains subsequent floods continue to hit provinces. Cunene province is the worst affected but other provinces are also affected. More than 200,000 people are directly affected of which 52,646 are displaced in Cunene.

D'autres préoccupations majeures sont les épidémies en cours notamment la méningite dans la ceinture méningitique et la fièvre jaune dans le Conté de Lofa au Libéria
