INTRODUCTION
As of 1st January 2000, there were 6.2 million people of concern to UNHCR in Africa out of an estimated 22.3 million worldwide. The Africa figure includes 3.5 million refugees, 1.7 million internally displaced and 0.9 million former refugees who have recently returned home. In January 1999, the global number of people of concern to UNHCR was 21.5 million, of whom 6.3 million were in Africa.
