88 Million Bed Nets Distributed for Malaria

Geneva - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria today announced that 2.3 million people living with HIV have been reached with lifesaving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment through AIDS programs it supports, a 31 per cent increase over results reported a year ago.

There is maximum alert and global mobilization in all the member states of the WHO African region following the swine flu epidemic in Mexico and some other countries. There are no official reports of the disease from any of the AFRO countries so far. Other major concerns are the ongoing outbreaks of diseases notably meningitis in the meningitis belt.

Angola: Floods have subsided but the aftermaths continue to hit the affected areas. According to the local authorities in Cunene, the situation is under control.

Floods in Southern and eastern Africa continue to be of high concern for both Governments and the Humanitarian communities. Other major concerns are ongoing outbreaks of diseases notably meningitis in the meningitis belt and Yellow fever in Lofa County in Libera.

Angola: Torrential rains subsequent floods continue to hit provinces. Cunene province is the worst affected but other provinces are also affected. More than 200,000 people are directly affected of which 52,646 are displaced in Cunene.

Even though the water levels in Southern Africa is subsiding, humanitarian partners still fear more floods in Angola and Namibia because rains are continuing. Other major concerns are ongoing outbreaks of diseases notably cholera and meningitis.

Angola: More than 200,000 people are directly affected by the flood of which 52,646 are reported displaced in Cunene. 24 deaths are now reported. With rains and flooding expected to continue into the middle of May, concerns have been expressed about the risk of water-borne diseases.

Angola: The flooding affecting Southern and Central provinces is worsening with an estimated 160,000 people affected with 19 recorded deaths. In Cunene, the worst affected province 52,646 people are displaced with 24,000 people living in reception camps in Ongiva. A total of 421 cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR is 0.48%) were reported*.

Angola : Les inondations touchant les provinces du sud et du centre s'aggravent. On estime à 160 000 les personnes touchées avec 19 décès. A Cunene, la province la plus touchée, 52 646 personnes ont été déplacées et 24 000 autres vivent dans des camps d'accueil à Ongiva. Au total 421 cas de choléra et 2 décès (létalité : 0,48%) ont été notifiés*.
