Contexte général

La situation sécuritaire dans l'est de la RDC est toujours précaire. En plus de cela une épidémie d'Ebola vient d'être confirmée dans la province du Kasaï Occidental, zone de santé de Mweka. L'épidémie de choléra au Zimbabwe n'est toujours pas sous contrôle. L'épidémie s'est propagée dans les pays d'Afrique australe.

General Context

The security situation in eastern DRC is still precarious. In addition an outbreak of Ebola has been confirmed in the province of Kasaï Occidental, health zone of Mweka. The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is not yet under control. The outbreak has spread in the Southern African countries. WHO and partners continue to support efforts aimed at information sharing from affected border districts, strengthening surveillance, as well as for resource mobilization.

The situation in DRC is still unstable with humanitarian aid not reaching many people. The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is still out of control. The outbreak is spreading in the Southern African countries. WHO and partners continue to support efforts aimed at information sharing from affected border districts, strengthening surveillance, as well as for resource mobilization.

New grant for FAO statistics improves information in 17 African countries

11 June 2008,Rome - The quality of statistical information from 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa will be dramatically increased with grant funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, reported FAO today.

The US$ 5.6 million grant over two years will allow the 17 countries identified, through the FAO country statistics information system (CountrySTAT), to substantially improve the quality, accessibility,relevance and reliability of their national statistics on food and agriculture.

Mortalité infantile en dessus et en dessous du Sahara

Le continent africain est divisé par le Sahara, le plus grand désert du monde, et cette démarcation n'est pas seulement géographique. Dans les pays situés essentiellement au nord du Sahara - Algérie, Égypte, Jamahiriya arabe libyenne, Maroc et Tunisie - le taux moyen de mortalité des enfants de moins de 5 ans en 2006 était de 35 pour 1 000 naissances vivantes, ce qui signifie qu'au cours de cette année particulière, environ 1 enfant sur 29 est mort avant son cinquième anniversaire.
