EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The AU Heads of State and Government adopted the Abuja Declarations and Plans of Action in 2000 and 2001, committing themselves to intensifying the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria and other infectious diseases (ORID). At their Abuja Special Summit of May 2006, they reaffirmed these pledges and committed themselves to scaling up action towards universal access to HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria services BY 2010. As was requested, the AU Commission, in collaboration with WHO and UNAIDS, prepared the 2-year Progress Report on the status of implementation in 2008.

New grant for FAO statistics improves information in 17 African countries

11 June 2008,Rome - The quality of statistical information from 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa will be dramatically increased with grant funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, reported FAO today.

The US$ 5.6 million grant over two years will allow the 17 countries identified, through the FAO country statistics information system (CountrySTAT), to substantially improve the quality, accessibility,relevance and reliability of their national statistics on food and agriculture.

AFRICA: In eastern Africa, heavy rains and floods have caused loss of life and destroyed crops and infrastructure in several countries. However, prospects for current crops have improved. In southern Africa, cereal import requirements in 2005/06 (excluding South Africa) are estimated about 30 percent higher than last year due to substantially reduced harvests in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. South Africa, on the other hand, is estimated to have more than enough exportable surplus of maize to meet the import needs of the subregion.
