Schools for Africa seeks to provide a quality education to the most disadvantaged children – including those who suffer from discrimination and harassment and those who face extreme poverty, political unrest or natural disasters – through UNICEF’s holistic, child-friendly schools programme.

And it has been showing promising results: As of December 2010, some 5.5 million children across Africa were receiving better educations through this initiative.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced the expansion of its Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) program. IRS is the application of safe insecticides to the indoor walls and ceilings of a home or structure in order to interrupt the spread of malaria by killing mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite. Malaria is the number one killer in Africa.

Summary: In 2009, there were 1,606 cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) reported globally (as of 10 March 2010); 738 of these cases were in Africa. The year proved to be challenging for the polio eradication effort, with outbreaks reported across a number of African countries.

Pandemic A (H1N1): There is an overall slight decline in the incidence since 4 weeks mainly due to the declining trend in South Africa. Twenty seven (27) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 13,583 and 102 deaths. Floods in West Africa which affected 635,273 people and killed 187 others are subsiding but we continue to monitor the health consequences.
