Detention Centre Profiling is a component of IOM Libya’s Displacement Matrix programme. It is a data oriented tool that routinely provides specific sex and age demographic data and key sectorial information on individuals held in Libya’s detention Centres.

In this round, 12 detention centres have been assessed, namely Abusliem, Al kufra, Alsabaa, Benghazi Al Wafiah, Ejdabia, Janzour, Misrata Kararim, Qasr Bin Ghasheer, Sabratha Melita, Tobruk, Trig al Seka, and Zliten.

Highlights

  • On 10 November, a commercial vessel reached the port of Misrata, carrying 95 refugees and migrants who were intercepted at sea in the attempt to reach Europe, and who subsequently refused to disembark onto Libyan soil.

  • On 14 November, a total of 14 individuals, including a woman and a three-month-old baby, voluntarily disembarked the vessel, while the remaining 81 individuals have to date stayed aboard the ship.

MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

Libya continues to be the main transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. UNHCR's interverntions at disembarkation points in Libya focus on the provision of life-saving assistance and protection monitoring, to identify persons in need of international protection, as well as vulnerable individuals, such as unaccompanied and separated children, elderly, medical cases, women at risk or victims of trafficking.

More than 5,578 IDP families and 6,733 migrants have benefitted from the distribution of NFIs and hygiene kits in different parts of Libya, including those accommodated in migrant detention centres.

Detained Youth: Study Probes Fate of Young Migrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Libya

Libya - A new study by Asmita Naik for the Mixed Migration Hub (MHub) reveals a consistent pattern of young migrants, refugees and asylum seekers held in Libya in arbitrary detention in squalid, cramped conditions for months at a time without any form of due process.

The study, which paints a damning picture of the immigration detention of young migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees in Libya today, explores their experiences between November 2012 and November 2014.
